Who are Spectrum’s competitors?

Spectrum’s primary competitors are satellite TV providers and streaming services. There are also a few places where its cable TV service overlaps with competitors like Xfinity, Cox, or Optimum. Spectrum also has competition in the fiber internet space, and most fiber ISPs have some kind of TV bundling option.

Spectrum TV touts a lower starting cost than almost any competitor, but keep in mind you’ll have to pay extra for premium channels, sports, and DVR. All channels are in HD, but there’s no 4K unless you also pay for high-speed internet and use the streaming app. The basic HD receiver option is less advanced than what you’ll find with most competitors, and the only way to get a voice remote is to buy a 4K Apple TV. There’s also a hefty local broadcasting fee that’s virtually impossible to avoid.

All told, you’ll pay less for Spectrum TV, but you’ll also get less in terms of total channels and equipment features. It’s a good choice for bargain shoppers who are bundling with internet service but aren’t quite ready to cut the cord. However, the best live TV streaming services are a better value if you watch only a few channels. If you watch a lot of live TV and are serious about sports and entertainment with stellar picture quality, DIRECTV or DISH might be a better choice.

Canceling Spectrum service?

Canceling Spectrum TV is pretty simple, as long as you’re willing to spend time on the phone—you can’t cancel online. However, there is good news! There are no contracts, and that means freedom to quit without early termination fees.

When you cancel, you’ll be required to return your equipment unless you prove that you have a disability and are unable to do so without help. It’s important to call first—they’ll keep charging you monthly fees until you do. Once you’ve confirmed cancellation, the easiest way to return your HD receiver and DVR is at a UPS store. Tell the staff you’re a Spectrum customer, and they’ll handle the packaging and shipping. If there’s no local UPS store, you can take a pre-printed shipping label and boxed equipment to a FedEx store or return directly to a local Spectrum store.

You won’t need to return cables or remotes, and if you purchased a 4K Apple TV, it’s yours to keep. If you are on the $9.99 monthly installment plan but haven’t yet paid off the device, whatever’s left will be due with your final bill.
