Optimum is a legacy cable provider, meaning it doesn't have a lot of direct competition from providers like Spectrum or Xfinity. Instead, its primary competition is from satellite TV providers DISH and DIRECTV or, in areas where fiber internet is available, Verizon Fios.
Verizon tends to be more reliable and receives higher customer satisfaction scores. We’d recommend most people go that route if they're bundling with internet. If you don't care about internet, you'll get more channels and a more traditional TV experience with satellite. However, promotions come and go all the time, so if you can get a better deal with Optimum, by all means, take advantage of it. You’ll still get an excellent TV and internet service.
If you decide to cancel Optimum service and go with a competitor, all you need to do is return your rented equipment to an Optimum store (or mail it in). There are no cancelation fees or other penalties with Optimum—just call Optimum customer service and let them know you want to cancel. They’ll provide instructions on where to return your equipment.
