Is Hawaiian Telcom worth the cost?

If you’re on the island of Oahu, we think Hawaiian Telcom is a solid choice for TV and internet service. It’s got a good channel selection, speedy internet, and Whole Home DVR service for a competitive price. We think most users should be satisfied.

That said, one thing to keep in mind is the stiff competition for TV service in Hawaii—both DISH and DIRECTV are direct competitors. Both of these services are likely to offer a better TV experience, although you’ll have to get your internet elsewhere.

Switching to Hawaiian Telcom?

If you’re switching to Hawaiian Telcom, the main thing to be aware of is that TV service is only available on Oahu—none of the other Hawaiian Islands. If you’re getting internet service, your home will also need to be wired for fiber, which may require a bit of installation.

Canceling Hawaiian Telcom services?

Canceling Hawaiian Telcom service is pretty simple. There are no contracts or early termination fees. There is one catch, though: when you cancel, you’ll be billed an “equipment return fee” of $200 per set top box or other piece of equipment you’ve rented. This will be refunded if you return the equipment within 45 days. This is really only applicable to internet customers—TV-only consumers wouldn’t have a reason to have a wireless gateway.
