Is Vivint worth the cost?

Vivint’s equipment costs and monitoring rates are some of the highest in the industry, and the company steers well away from pricing transparency. Generally speaking, equipment starts at around $600 (but can go much, much higher), and your monthly bill can be $85 or more per month, not including the finance charge for your equipment. Each camera or Car Guard in your system adds $5 per month, and if you order more than $4,000 worth of equipment, you’ll pay an additional $30 Large System Fee each month.

So yes, Vivint has a high price tag. But if you want a home security system with lots of smart home bells and whistles, you want to skip any DIY setup, and you’re ready to pay top dollar for monitoring, Vivint is probably the brand for you. We like to think of it as the Cadillac of home security.

How Vivint stacks up on value

Vivint doesn’t require contracts—but only if you pay for all your equipment up front. If you’re willing to commit, it looks like you could negotiate down some of the monthly monitoring fees. We think this is a great way to save with Vivint. Even if you can fork over hundreds or thousands of dollars up front for all your gear, Vivint’s high equipment prices will probably make you feel locked in just so you get your money’s worth.

We love how much smart home capability Vivint has over many of its competitors, thanks to its in-house line of smart products. But you can get a lot of these features by pairing a cheaper security system with Google Home or Apple HomeKit for less money—and we find that a lot of people prefer to sync third-party devices with their home security system, anyway. All that said, home security is about peace of mind more than anything else. And Vivint is a great choice if you’re willing to pay top dollar to feel secure without having to think much about it.

Cancelation costs for Vivint

If you bought all your equipment up front, there’s no contract, so you can cancel service at any time. Just call customer service and be prepared to fend off a few offers to negotiate yourself into a contract. When we did it, we got a pretty sweet offer, so if you’re open to staying, it could be worth considering.

If you financed your gear and you’re still paying it off, you could be on the hook for the rest of your contract—and buying the rest of your gear, to boot. But if you’re moving, don’t sweat it. You can have Vivint transfer your setup to your new home and continue your contract as usual.

Cancelation fee: $0, but you must finish paying the remaining balance on any financed equipment
Contract length: Up to 60 months if you finance your equipment; otherwise, no contract required
