Is Arlo worth the cost?

Arlo's more affordable system is well worth the cost if you need only the basics. For around $200, you’ll get a keypad hub and two all-in-one sensors. Besides the versatile equipment, Arlo doesn't require contracts, and you can cancel anytime. A three-month monitoring trial comes with the price, allowing new home security system users to learn the ropes before committing to a professional monitoring plan. Homeowners can also choose to self-monitor for free if they don't need 24/7 professional monitoring.

The more extensive system, which includes one keypad sensor hub, five all-in-one sensors, and a yard sign, costs around $300. Keeping in mind that the sensors can detect motion, open/close, open/close tilt (ideal for garages), and water leaks, this price is competitive with other home security brands offering a similar package. From our experience, you're getting a steal if you can get a comprehensive home security system for under $400.

How Arlo stacks up on value

Although we were pessimistic about Arlo’s overall value at first, the system’s versatility made us think otherwise. We consider value not only by upfront and monthly cost (Arlo is very affordable on both counts), but also by the quality of the equipment.

The home security industry is generally broken up into two models: DIY and professional installation. The professionally installed brands, such as Vivint and ADT, are far more expensive than the competition but have extremely high-quality devices and a proven track record. Arlo’s fellow DIYers, on the other hand, are generally less expensive and offer high customization.

While we originally thought that Arlo would live somewhere in the middle of the DIY pack, we were pleasantly surprised by its minimalist approach and versatile sensors—giving it extremely high value, in our opinion.
